Crochet Bauble Pattern
This Christmas crochet bauble is a brilliant yarn stash-busting pattern. I created this design after wanting to crochet some baubles for the first time. You can use this pattern to create different styles by using different colour yarns per round or weaving in tinsel yarn, giving that extra Christmassy feel. Since we don’t need to sew the ends in, adding more colours doesn’t come with more work.
Like anything, when you start something new, my first port of call was to do a google image search and check out Pinterest to gather inspiration and find other free patterns that I can practise with. That is where I stumbled across this free pattern by Annie Design Crochet and fell in love with it. It is so easy and simple but looks so pretty and Christmassy!
There were many other bauble designs I loved, but I couldn’t find the patterns, so I decided to recreate my own version of them. And here is my take on a ribbed crochet bauble design.
Materials
Bauble 5cm
Cotton yarn (colours of your choice)
3.5mm Hook
Stitches
slst: slip stitch
ch: chain
tr: treble
fptr: front post treble
tr2tog: 2 treble stitches together
Wrap the yarn round the hook, insert the hook into the next stitch, wrap the yarn, pull a loop through, wrap the yarn and pull through 2 of the loops on hook (2 loops left on the hook)
Wrap the yarn around the hook, insert the hook into the next stitch, wrap the yarn, pull a loop through, wrap the yarn and pull through 2 loops, wrap the yarn and pull through the last 3 loops on the hook.
dec: decrease
Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over hook and pull through, yarn over and pull through 2 of the 3 loops on the hook. (You should have 2 loops on the hook).
Yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over hook and pull through, yarn over pull through 2 loops, yarn over pull through 3 loops.
Notes
This pattern is written using UK crochet terminology. The pattern is using 5 different colours however you can change the yarn every round or use the same colour throughout, and weave some tinsel though at the end to add some flourish to the bauble.
Pattern
Round 1: Ch4 then work 11tr into the first st and slst to the top of the ch3 [12]
Round 2: Ch3 then tr in the same stitch, 2tr in the next 11sts, then slst to top of ch3, fasten off [24]
Attach the next colour onto the opposite from where you fastened off. This will help to even out the joints and hide them in the pattern.
Round 3: Ch3, tr in same stitch, fptr in the next stitch *2tr, fptr* 11 times, slst to top of ch3 (36)
Now we only want to fptr in an existing fptr, which will then give us the raised line effect. We will just be repeating and not increasing in the next couple of rounds
Round 4: Ch3, tr in next stitch, then fptr in the fptr below. *tr in the next 2 sts, fptr* 11 times, then slst to top of ch3, fasten off (36)
Attach next colour yarn at the other side to where you fastened off. Work into a stitch to the left of a fptr stitch
Round 5: Ch3, tr in next stitch, then fptr in the fptr below. *tr in the next 2 sts, fptr* 11 times, then slst to top of ch3, fasten off (36)
Round 6: repeat round 5
Attach new yarn through any fptr. Place your bauble inside your work, as we will begin to decrease and it may get harder to do so after this round.
Round 7: ch3 in fptr, dec in next 2tr, *fptr, dec* 11 times, slst to top of ch3 and fasten off.
Attach new yarn through any fptr.
Round 8: ch3 in fptr, tr *fptr, tr* 11 times, slst to top of ch3 and fasten off.
Round 9: chain 1 then dec starting in the same stitch, dec 11 times.
Round 10: chain 1 then dec starting in the same stitch, dec 11 times and fasten off. Use your crochet hook to tuck the end securely between the bauble and the crocheted cover.
I hope you enjoyed making this bauble as much as I did creating the pattern. I would love to see your makes, just tag me on Instagram @HappyGoHooky.
